Press Release

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Brussels categorically rejects the unfounded allegations made against Iran in a Summit Communiqué issued by NATO Heads of State on 11 July 2023.

The claims regarding Iran's involvement in the Ukrainian situation are baseless and motivated by short-sighted gains. Iran maintains a neutral position in the Ukrainian conflict. As a responsible and influential regional actor, Iran consistently emphasizes the importance of full adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant international law. This includes respecting the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all states.

Despite Iran's commitment to international legal norms, it has suffered from the actions of several NATO members who have actively fostered discord within the country by sheltering and supporting violent terrorist elements and organizations.

Iran has been at the forefront of combating all forms of international terrorism and has paid a significant price in this ongoing struggle. Iran has also played a constructive role in assisting regional governments in countering destabilizing forces that often receive support from external sources.

Regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear program, the Islamic Republic of Iran remains resolute in its determination to uphold its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). However, some NATO member states, who are also parties to the JCPOA, have consistently violated their commitments under the agreement and the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolution (Resolution 2231).Accusations made against Iran regarding its nuclear commitments should be viewed in light of the reality of non-implementation of the Plan of Action by these NATO member states. Notably, the United States' withdrawal from the accord in 2018 serves as a prominent example of such violations. Applying maximum pressure against Iran by many members of NATO that has brought about too much misery for the Iranian people is tantamount to a crime against humanity; so it must be stopped.

The Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon NATO member countries to cease making baseless accusations against Iran and urges them to honor their commitments under the United Nations Charter.
